The 10 Mark Hamburg gold coin was produced with a fineness of 900/1000. The copper alloy chosen made the coin more durable and less prone to damages caused by daily use.
The obverse of the coin shows the city coat of arms of Hamburg. The reverse depicts the coat of arms, the nominal value and the year of minting.
On 18. January 1871 the 25 German states were united into one German empire. As part of the creation of the Empire a monetary reform was carried out and the Taler was replaced by the Mark as legal tender. Each of the Regent States obtained the right to mint their own Reichsgoldmark. Hence, the coins minted depict various portraits.
