The Libertad silver coin was released in 1982 by the Mexican mint Casa de Moneda de Mexico. In contrast to all other common silver bullion coins, the Libertad does not have a face value. Nonetheless, it has the status of legal tender in Mexico. The coin’s value is directly linked to the daily value of the silver used for its production.
Initially, only 1oz coins were available. From 1992, coins weighing 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/2 oz were added to the series and 1999 coins of 2 oz and 5 oz were released. Since 2002, 1 kg coins have been minted in small quantities.
The Libertad has been revised four times until now, which led to changes in design and dimensions.
The obverse of the coin features a winged Victoria as a symbol of Mexican independence. The reverse shows the coat of arms of Mexico. Since 2000, the coins feature a new design of the reverse, now showing a smaller version of the initial motive surrounded by ten historic versions of the coat of arms.
Additionally, Gold Libertad are being produced since 1981. The are by now available in sizes of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz.
