Details
Since 1990, the Australian Perth Mint issues Kookaburra silver coins with annually changing motives. They are legal tender in Australia and 999.0/1000 pure silver is used for their production.
Since 1993, the reverse of each coin depicts different illustrations of Kookaburras. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
To mark the 30th anniversary of the coin, for the first time both sides show a kookaburra motif. The obverse is decorated with the typical portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and a kookaburra sitting on a tree stump. The back shows a kookaburra on a roof ridge.
All coins are manufactured as proof like coins, apart from certain years that are also available as proof coins.
The first coins issued were manufactured as 1 oz coins with a face value of AU$ 5. In 1991, sizes of 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg were added to the series. However, production of 2 oz coins stopped on 2009. Apart from these changes, the face value of all Kookaburra coins was reduced in 1992.
