Details

Chinese Panda Gold Coins were first issued in 1982 by the People's Bank of China.
They have legal tender status in China and are one of few legal tender bullion gold coins to change their design every year, another being the Australian Gold Nugget. Together with their limited annual mintage this may, unlike for many other bullion coins, lead to a rise in numismatic value over the value of gold used.
There are several mints that produce these coins, including but not limited to: Beijing, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Shenyang. The obverse of the coin shows the Temple of Heaven, the reverse depicts different illustrations of giant pandas.
China issued its first gold coins picturing a panda in sizes of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz of 999 fine gold. In 1983 the 1/20 oz size was added. There is also a Silver Panda series issued with the same designs as the Gold Panda coins.
2016 begins a new era for Panda coins. The old weight system of troy ounces was replaced by the metric system of gramme, the standard system of weights used in the People’s Republic of China. For the first time, the full range of Mint State gold and silver Panda coins will be issued in metric weights of 1 g, 3 g, 8 g, 15 g, and 30 g.
