Details
The American Gold Buffalo was first issued by the United States Mint in 2006.
This was the first time ever that the United States Government has minted pure 999.9/1000 gold coins for the public.
The coin has legal tender status in the United States of America. However, due to a combination of the coin's popularity and the increase in the price of gold since its creation the coin's value has increased considerably in just a few years.
The obverse of the coin depicts a Native American. Atop a mound of dirt on the reverse of the coin stands an American Bison which commonly are referred to as buffalo.
Initially, only available as 1 oz coin, the United States Mint expanded the program in 2008 to include buffalo gold coins in fractional sizes of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/2 oz.
