Details
The first Vienna Philharmonic was offered on October 10, 1989. Since then, the coin has become the most successful European bullion gold coin and is the only bullion coin with a face value in Euros. According to World Gold Council, the Vienna Philharmonic was the best selling gold coin worldwide in 1992, 1995, 1996, and 2000.
Since its launch, the design of the coin remained the same each year and shows on the obverse of the coin the pipe organ in the Vienna Musikverein’s Golden Hall. The reverse of the coin depicts instruments of the famous Vienna Orchestra, including Vienna horn, bassoon, harp, two violins, and two Violas centred on a cello. Only the year of issue changes accordingly. The coin designed by Thomas Pesendorfer, chief engraver of the Austrian Mint, has been awarded several times.
The golden Vienna Philharmonics are available in different sizes – 1/25 oz, 1/10oz, 1/4oz, 1/2oz, and 1 oz. Furthermore, silver Vienna Philharmonics 1oz have been issued since 2008.
