Details
The Gold Britannia was first issued by the Royal Mint in 1987. Fractional sizes were available from the start as 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz. The Britannia, therefore, was the first European bullion coin modern times.
Initially, the coin was made with a fineness of 916.67/1000 (22 karat).
From 1987 to 1989 only copper was used as an alloy, from 1990 onwards same amounts of copper and silver were used (41.66/1000 each). In 2013 production was changed so that Britannia coins now have a purity of 999.9/1000 (24 karat).
During the earlier years, the motive of the coin was changed slightly so that from 1987 to 2000 the reverse of the coins pictured similar motives of Britannia. The new millennium gave the opportunity to change the motive for odd years. For even years, the “Standing Britannia Design” was used. This procedure was applied until the year of minting 2008.
As customary for coins produced in the Commonwealth, a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II is shown on the obverse.
Since 1997, a silver Britannia is available as well as 1 oz coin.
