Details
The American Gold Eagle was first issued by the United States Mint in 1986.
It quickly became one of the bullion coin classics, aided by the boycott of Krugerrand at the time.
The obverse design features Lady Liberty with flowing hair, holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, with the Capitol building in the left background. This design is taken from the US$ 20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin. The reverse design features an eagle in profile.
The Gold Eagle is offered in 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz denominations. By law, the gold must come from sources in America, and is alloyed with silver and copper to produce a more wear-resistant coin.
Additionally, a Silver Eagle is available, however only as 1 oz coin.
