From 1988 to 2000, the Australian Perth Mint issued Koala platinum coins with annually changing motives. They are legal tender in Australia and 999.5/1000 pure platinum is used for their production.
The reverse of each coin depicts different illustrations of Koala bears. The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
The production of proof like coins was stopped in 2000, the production of proof coins continued until 2005.
The first coins issued were manufactured as 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz coins. In 1990, sizes of 1/20 oz followed and 1992 2 oz, 10 oz, and 1 kg coins completed the series. The latter being the largest platinum bullion coin at the time.
