The 20 Mark gold coin Wilhelm I. was used as money in daily life. The coins were minted from 1871 to 1888.
The 20 Mark Wilhelm I. gold coin was produced with a fineness of 900/1000. The copper alloy chosen made the coin more durable and less prone to damages caused by daily use.
The obverse of the coin shows the half-portrait of Wilhelm I. The reverse depicts the coat of arms, the nominal value and the year of minting.
On 18. January 1871 the 25 German states were united into one German empire. As part of the creation of the Empire a monetary reform was carried out and the Taler was replaced by the Mark as legal tender. Each of the Regent States obtained the right to mint their own Reichsgoldmark. Hence, the coins minted depict various portraits.
