Details

The Krugerrand was first introduced in 1967 as a vehicle for private ownership of gold. It was the world’s first ounce-denominated gold coin which was also mass-produced to enable everyone to purchase gold easily at a low premium above the gold price.
The name ‘Krugerrand’ is derived from Paul Kruger and the rand, the monetary unit of South Africa. Therefore, the design on the obverse of each of the coins depicts the President of the Zuid Afrikaanse Republiek, Paul Kruger. The reverse design shows the prancing springbok, South Africa’s national animal.
Unusual for bullion coins, the Krugerrand was given the status of legal tender. To this end, it was minted in a more durable copper-gold alloy. Still, they have no face value. The value of each coin is directly related to the prevailing value of its gold content.
By 1980 the Krugerrand accounted for 90 % of the global gold coin market and the fractional Krugerrands – of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/2 oz – were added to this historic coin series.
Even though the Krugerrand has always been a popular coin, production levels have varied over the last 50 years. From 1967–1969, around 40,000 coins were minted each year. In 1970, the amount rose to over 200,000 coins. Over one million coins were produced in 1974 and in 1978 even six million Krugerrands were produced. Following the end of apartheid production dropped to 23,277 coins in 1998 and since then levels have increased again, albeit not reaching pre-international sanction levels. Until today, Krugerrand coins containing 46 million ounces of gold have been sold.
